Come celebrate Mundelein's new village hall Saturday

Mundelein officials will celebrate the recently completed construction of a new village hall with an open house Saturday.

It's one of a pair of community events scheduled for the weekend near the downtown area.

The open house is set to run from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at village hall, 300 Plaza Circle. It's on a new road south of Hawley Street and east of Seymour Avenue, near the village's Metra station.

Tours of the building and family-friendly activities are planned. Refreshments will be available.

"There's going to be a ton of people there," Mayor Steve Lentz told the Daily Herald. "This is the public's building. They paid for it."

Lentz is among the scheduled speakers. So is Trustee Ray Semple, the village's longest-serving board member.

He'll give the crowd a little historical perspective, Lentz said.

Mundelein High School's drum line and choir will perform, too.

The village hall opened to the public in June. The two-story building at 300 Plaza Circle cost about $10 million and took more than a year to construct.

Village staffers occupy about 15,000 square feet on the first floor, while a business called Weston Solutions has the entire second floor.

Officials haven't yet decided what to do with the old village hall at 440 E. Hawley St.

Mundelein's fourth annual fine arts festival is this weekend, too. It will be staged Saturday and Sunday in Kracklauer Park, 100 N. Seymour Ave.

The festival will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. Admission is free.

People can purchase art, listen to music and enjoy food from vendors.

Don't expect to breeze through the booths in five minutes, Lentz said.

"It really is a growing and evolving event that's becoming more significant," he said.
