Sunstar Americas brings 400 new jobs to Schaumburg

Sunstar Americas Inc. has completed its new North American headquarters in Schaumburg, bringing 400 jobs to the village.

The 302,000-square-foot office and manufacturing facility just off the Jane Addams Tollway will produce oral health care items previously made at an aging Chicago building. The company also has a suburban presence in Elgin.

Company officials are planning an invitation-only opening ceremony for the new headquarters in early June.

Sunstar is an 84-year-old company that provides products and services in more than 90 countries. Having started in Japan as a manufacturer of bicycle parts and rubber glue, the company now makes its international headquarters in Switzerland and has developed a diverse portfolio that also includes motorcycle parts, beauty products and construction materials.

The new building lies on land previously owned by the Archdiocese of Chicago. It was designed by Itasca-based Heitman Architects and built by Peak Construction Corp. of Des Plaines.

The three-story building north of the tollway and east of Medieval Times Dinner and Tournament features a 350-foot-long gallery overlook running north and south between its offices and factory floor. The gallery's "lantern" on the south end appears as a blue-colored beacon to drivers westbound on the tollway.

Other features of the building include an atrium dining hall, fitness room and 200-seat auditorium.
