'Guys and Dolls,' 'Beauty and the Beast' on tap at Naperville's BrightSide Theatre

Naperville's BrightSide Theatre on Friday announced its sixth season will consist of Broadway favorites from the past and present.

The 2016-2017 season begins Nov. 11 with the stage adaptation of the animated Disney film “Beauty and the Beast.” Based on the 18th century fairy tale, the story focuses on a young woman who manages to tame the beast who holds her father captive. Artistic director Jeffrey Cass helms the family-friendly production.

That's followed by Ken Ludwig's backstage comedy “Moon Over Buffalo” (March 10-26, 2017). Set during the 1950s, it's about fading Broadway stars working at a second-tier theater who believe they'll get a second chance at fame courtesy of Hollywood director Frank Capra, who is rumored to attend a matinee. Aaron Henrickson directs.

The season concludes with Frank Loesser's “Guys and Dolls” (June 9-25, 2017), adapted from Damon Runyon's stories by Abe Burrows and Jo Swerling. Set during the 1940s, it centers on charismatic gambler Sky Masterson's efforts to get a date with the straight-laced Sarah Brown to win a bet with Nathan Detroit, who's got his own romantic problems with longtime fiancee Adelaide. Cass directs.

Performances take place at the theater at Meiley-Swallow Hall at North Central College, 31 S. Ellsworth Ave., Naperville. Season subscription available. Single tickets, starting at $20, go on sale Aug. 1. (630) 447-8497 or brightsidetheatre.com.
