Powder-Alpine Simulator

Desperate to hit the slopes but don't have the vacation time?

Powder-Alpine Simulator isn't nearly as thrilling as a black diamond run, but it may be able to help you get away for a few minutes at least.

This soothing game gives you a birds-eye view of your downhill run, with the aim of getting as far as you can without hitting an obstacle. (Another advantage of a virtual ski trip - no injuries.)

This app is best played with headphones to appreciate the snowy sound effects.

Players pick up speed as they make their way down the hill, so be sure to adjust your steering accordingly.

You can also hold your finger down to carve into the mountain a little harder, or tap to jump over smaller obstacles.

It's not quite the "simulator" that its name might suggest - you'd never mistake playing this for racing down a hill.

But this simple app is surprisingly calming, and provides a nice mental break for those moments when you'd rather be on the slopes.

Free, for iOS and Android.

Trulia

Thinking about relocating for a little while?

Trulia's app for renting apartments and houses gives you a glimpse of what the market looks like all around the country, and it aims to help you find an ideal new place to call home.

Searchers can check out the area around them or plug in just about any place in the country where you might want to browse.

If you're really serious, you can also filter down rental properties using a variety of factors such as the number of bedrooms or unit amenities - just in case you can't live without your own washer and dryer.

If you find something that strikes your fancy, you can contact the property owner through the app itself.

An account isn't required to search, but if you want to save your favorites, you will have to register with the app.

You can also opt to be notified when new properties are listed that match your criteria.

If only moving itself were quite so easy.

Free, for iOS and Android.
