Walgreens moves jobs to Chicago, remains in Deerfield

Walgreens is moving some technology workers from Deerfield to its Chicago office, but stressed its headquarters will remain in the northern suburb.

Walgreens is establishing a new technology center in the Sullivan Center, 36 S. Wabash, Chicago, and plans to bring in about 300 pharmacy retail technology positions. These will be a combination of new hires and relocations from the support office in Deerfield, spokesman Phil Caruso said Tuesday. The digital, mobile and e-commerce technology teams will be at the Chicago office, he said.

"This helps us retain and attract the best talent" for these roles, Caruso said.

"Chicago is where Walgreens began as a single drugstore in 1901, and expanding our downtown presence will help us retain and attract the best talent to continue developing our digital and technology capabilities," said Walgreens President Alex Gourlay in a statement.

Walgreens employs more than 3,500 people in the city of Chicago, where it operates 136 drugstores.

There are more than 6,500 jobs at the Deerfield headquarters. "Deerfield remains the headquarters for Walgreens Boots Alliance. That will not change," Caruso said. "Nothing about today's announcement changes that."

Deerfield is home to several global headquarters.

Caterpillar Inc. has announced it is moving its new global headquarters to Deerfield. Caterpillar reached a multiyear leasing agreement with Corporate 500 office park. The company expects about 100 employees to relocate this year, with about 300 people in the new headquarters when fully operational in mid-2018.

Caterpillar joins other headquarters for CF Industries, Mondelez and Takeda.
