Palatine OKs pizzeria location shift, Pita Pita kitchen expansion

Palatine village council members have approved a new pizzeria's request to open one space down from its original location in a Northwest Highway mall, as well as a second restaurant's request to expand its kitchen facilities.

Under the initial plan, Pizzateca was to open at 235 W. Northwest Highway next to Dunkin' Donuts in the United Center mall, just west of Smith Street. The village council in December approved a liquor license and special-use permit for Pizzateca to operate from the space.

However, Pizzateca owner Kadir Cicek later expressed concern about being next to the doughnut chain and asked the village for permission to move one space over to 239 W. Northwest Highway. The council approved the request this week.

Cicek's concerns about the original space included a trash container and power panel near Pizzateca's rear door and Dunkin' Donuts' sign jutting out about a foot from the front wall, possibly making his business' identification less obvious.

"Also, we risk the chance of our signage blending with and/or becoming less visible given that (Dunkin' Donuts') surface color is very busy," Cicek said in an email to Palatine officials.

Pizzateca patrons will get to choose their dough, sauce and toppings in an assembly line format. Cicek said it's a family-owned business with unique recipes.

Meanwhile, Pita Pita Mediterranean Grill received village council approval this week to expand next door into part of Boost Mobile's space at 1278 E. Dundee Road, just east of Baldwin Road. Pita Pita will gain 602 square feet.

Owner Mustafa Hammad said extra food preparation and storage space are needed for a plan to also serve other locations. Certain food made in Palatine would be delivered to the other restaurants in an effort for more product consistency, Hammad said.
