Skimming device found on Libertyville ATM

Libertyville police are cautioning residents after being notified recently that a skimming device had been placed on an ATM in the village.

Such devices are placed over the actual card reader on an ATM, gas pump or other device where someone might pay with a credit or debit card. Some thieves also use a small camera or pin pad to read a person's PIN number as they conduct a transaction, then use the information from the skinner and camera to unlawfully access an account.

Police say consumers should look for anything that appears odd, such as discolored or ill fitting parts, labels that are covered up, and lights that don't appear to be completely visible. They also can give the card reader a slight tug to make sure there's not a skimmer placed over the real card reader.

Anyone who finds a skimming device should notify the business and contact police, and try not to touch it so investigators can recover it for evidence.
