Mundelein High board may again seek bids for golf course

The Mundelein High School District 120 board on Tuesday may again vote to seek potential buyers for a district-owned golf course.

Officials hope a homebuilder will buy more than half the 94-acre Village Green Country Club, which is on the southeast corner of Midlothian and Winchester roads.

"Times are better and things are selling and building is going on," board member Jane Siegal said.

Board members and administrators have said they want to keep about 40 acres at Village Green to build athletic fields so teams can practice simultaneously.

Teams have "real difficulty" arranging practice times now because of the limited on-campus field space, Siegal said.

Tuesday's school board meeting is set for 6:30 p.m. at Mundelein High, 1350 W. Hawley St.

The board voted in April 2017 to put the 18-hole course on the market.

Officials scrapped bids last summer after potential buyers said they didn't have enough time to properly examine the site, investigate potential building permits and prepare offers.

Administrators said they would develop a new bidding schedule to give interested developers more time to handle those tasks.

The district paid $8.4 million for Village Green in 2004. At the time, enrollment was expected to increase dramatically and officials thought they might need land for a second campus.

Those population projections didn't pan out.

A company called GolfVisions Management has run Village Green since 2007. GolfVisions pays the school district 5 percent of the course's gross revenue, with a minimum payment of $50,000 annually.

The agreement with GolfVisions expires in 2020 but may be terminated early.
