'Caddyshack'-themed mini-golf coming to Wauconda Saturday

If you've been waiting for a chance to break out your new stereo-equipped golf bag or an ugly striped hat, rejoice - downtown Wauconda will be turned into a "Caddyshack"-themed miniature golf course for a charity tournament Saturday.

Thirteen Main Street businesses are participating in the promotion. Proceeds will benefit the Main Street Attraction group, which organizes and funds local beautification projects such as seasonal light fixtures and banners.

Each business is building an indoor hole inspired by "Caddyshack," the classic 1980 comedy starring Chevy Chase, Rodney Dangerfield, Wilmette's own Bill Murray and Ted Knight.

The Wauconda Area Chamber of Commerce's hole will re-create the infamous scene in which guests at the fictitious Bushwood Country Club mistake a chocolate candy bar floating in the swimming pool for something less pleasant.

"It includes a Baby Ruth candy bar and a hazmat-suited guest," chamber Executive Director Maria Weisbruch said.

The event was organized by the folks at Lindy's Landing restaurant and marina.

"We were looking for something to bring everyone out on Main Street this spring," said Michelle Carlson, who oversees marketing at Lindy's.

The "Caddyshack" theme was a natural fit for the tournament, Carlson said. She's a fan of the flick.

"I have seen the movie a time or two," Carlson said.

In addition to Lindy's Landing and the chamber, the businesses hosting mini-golf holes are the Village Inn, Silver Lotus Yoga, Whisk Bakery & Coffee Shop, Side Lot Brewery, Ryan & Co. Realtors, Edward Jones financial services, Threads Boutique, Puna Chocolate Co., Middleton's on Main, Bliss Wine & Gifts, and Slyce Coal Fired Pizza.

"There are sure to be some pretty creative golf holes on the course, with the terrific variety of businesses involved," Weisbruch said.

The tournament is open to anyone 21 and older and costs $100 per foursome. The price includes admission to a party at Lindy's Landing after the event.

You'd better hurry if you want to play, though, because only 26 teams can tee up. To register, call Lindy's Landing at (847) 526-9789.

Play runs 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Golfers should check in at 11 a.m. at Lindy's Landing, 115 Park St.

Anyone can observe the tournament for free.

"The more the merrier," Carlson said. "Hopefully it'll take off and be around for years to come."
