Siemens, Libertyville firm part of group upgrading NY-NJ train system

FRANKFURT -- German industrial conglomerate Siemens AG is leading a consortium that will upgrade the PATH rail system connecting New York and New Jersey.

Siemens says the consortium had signed a $321 million agreement with the Port Authority Trans-Hudson to modernize and automate the rail system crossing the Hudson River. The upgrade will increase passenger capacity from 240,000 to 250,000 passengers per day.

Locally Siemens has operations in Buffalo Grove, Deerfield, Chicago, Hoffman Estates, Schaumburg, Glen Ellyn, Elk Grove, Mundelein, Oak Brook, Rolling Meadows, Wood Dale and Elgin.

Libertyville-based Aldridge Electric is also part of the consortium.

The project will add a Communication-Based Train Control to the PATH network that will reduce the intervals between trains allowing for more trains to use the same tracks.

Siemens will also provide a train supervision system that will increase efficiency and allow PATH to know exactly where each train is located.
