Elk Grove Township plans to sell up to three properties

Elk Grove Township is considering a sale of as many as three buildings it owns, including the township headquarters on Arlington Heights Road, officials said Tuesday.

Supervisor Mike Sweeney said at the township's annual meeting Tuesday night that the potential sales are part of a consolidation effort that would bring township services under one roof, and allow the properties to get back on the tax rolls.

Sweeney's first priority is to sell the township's youth services building at 401 W. Golf Road in Mount Prospect, valued at $250,000.

Then, he's proposed selling the 57-year-old township headquarters building, 2400 S. Arlington Heights Road in Arlington Heights, valued at $1 million, while looking for a new headquarters building.

"The goal is to find a building that serves us better, with more space and the parking we need," Sweeney said. "By looking at a new place, it gives us a chance to get into the right property without having to undergo an expensive renovation."

Earlier this year, township officials expressed interest in buying Elk Grove Township Elementary District 59's administration building down the block at 2123 S. Arlington Heights Road.

But when the school board decided to sell that property with the neighboring former Wellington banquets site, Sweeney said it made most sense for both parcels to be sold and developed together.

The school district plans to build its new administration center at the old Lively school site on Leicester Road in Elk Grove Village.

Meanwhile, Sweeney said a long-term goal is also to put a township-owned former school building at 711 Chelmsford Lane in Elk Grove Village on the market. It's currently leased to a nonprofit day care center and Cook County Commissioner Tim Schneider, who has his district office there.

An appraisal found the building is worth $2.5 million.

Sweeney said the Golf Road building could be sold by the end of summer, while the township headquarters sale could last into the start of 2017.

The Chelmsford Lane property could take longer to sell since it is larger, Sweeney said.

Any property sales would require the vote of township residents at a special meeting.
