Mavon Insurance celebrates 100 years

HINSDALE - Mavon Insurance is celebrating its 100th anniversary as a family owned agency representing many of the industry's insurance companies.

In 1902, Girard Aloysius (G.A.) Mavon began his career traveling by bicycle to sell insurance door to door. He founded his own managing general agency, G.A. Mavon & Co., in 1916, referring to the business as "The Service Built Agency." P.G. (Jerry) Mavon, Jr., who currently serves as chairman, joined the company in 1966 and in 1991, son Philip G. Mavon III, the fourth generation of Mavons and current president, entered the business - making 2016 not only the company's 100th anniversary but also the 50th and 25th service anniversaries, respectively, for Jerry and Phil.

G.A. Mavon & Co. added Gamco Premium Finance Co. to its family of companies in 1967 to provide agents and brokers with in-house premium financing. Mavco Insurance Agency, an independent agency, was founded in 1972.

All Mavon companies have called Hinsdale home since 1979 when Jerry seized an opportunity to purchase the Mavon Insurance Center property from Charles Comiskey II, former owner of the Chicago White Sox. As a tribute to his beloved Chicago Cubs, Jerry immediately covered the west side of the building with ivy to resemble Wrigley Field.
