Mulligan wants to help Millennials

Mike Mulligan, who has operated a career management consulting firm for more than 30 years, is expanding his services to assist millennials with career and college planning.

The Rolling Meadows business owner believes young people are in need of assistance in figuring out how to navigate the college plan and find employment in their chosen field. "There is research that shows there is a strong need for this service," said the Arlington Heights resident who founded Mulligan Associates Inc.

He believes many teenagers need more assistance than what is provided at local high schools. Mulligan said research has found that the student ratio per one high school counselor is 476 to 1. He added that the average public school student receives limited personal counseling over four years and that four students out of 10 receive some college advising.

As a result, he says students are unsure and lack direction about what they want to study when attending college, forcing them to stay in school longer, often five or six years.

Mulligan uses his previous experience to help work with young people. He has worked with the Institute of Career Certification International for 20 years and wrote several books.

Mulligan, who has a Ph.D. in counseling, works with students to realize and develop talents while in high school and set and meet goals when approaching college.

"I'm not sure if people understand how to manage their career journey," he said.

Mulligan has created three competency surveys on his website, www.managemycareer.info, to assist clients in what they know about career planning and management, high school planning and college planning.

Those who fill out a survey will receive an email score report back showing what they indicate they know and don't know about the subject matter or themselves. He then offers counseling services based on the score of the surveys.

Northpoint Road in Waukegan. The property was the former headquarters for WMS Industries.

The precast building was originally constructed in 1995 and expanded in 1998 and 2007. The building contains 93,773 square feet of two-story office and 262,546 square feet of warehouse space that is fully air-conditioned. The property is divisible down to 100,000 square feet.

"This was a unique opportunity to acquire an asset with rare combination of amenities within an institutional business park. The high image facility will cater to the corporate tenants within Lake County and the building's abundant parking and easily divisible floor plan allows for us to accommodate a wide range of tenants," said Matt Goode, principal at Venture One.

Coffee test

Where's the best place for that morning cup of coffee or afternoon pick-me-up? Starbucks and Dunkin' Donuts are tied for highest quality coffee among Americans, while the runner-up comes out of a canister, according to a recent survey.

Sixty-four percent of U.S. adults in a recent Morning Consult poll said they consider Starbucks and Dunkin' Donuts coffee to be "good" or "excellent." Close behind, at 62 percent, is Folgers.

When asked to rank coffee brands against one another based on quality, Starbucks was the clear winner, garnering 32 percent of the vote from U.S. adults, compared with 16 percent for Folgers and 13 percent for Dunkin' Donuts.

Folgers got a boost from older demographics: Starbucks beat Folgers by only 3 percentage points when people age 65 or older picked the "highest quality" brand. Starbucks leads among 18- to 29-year-olds, with 48 percent saying their coffee is "excellent."

Students who major in business at Benedictine University can participate in a five-week, noncredit personal branding seminar that teaches how to achieve employment after graduation. Students learn how to dress for an interview, how to write a resume and how to network with professionals in the fields they want to enter.

The seminar is punctuated by an opportunity to practice what they have learned face-to-face with professionals in their field of interest. More than 60 students participated in a Professional Networking Reception event in November at which they met with experts in accounting, business law, finance, human resources, insurance, digital marketing and several other fields.
