Sitka Salmon Shares, which provides sustainably caught wild seafood direct from fishermen, opened its third location at 950 Estes Court in Schaumburg.
The company, which is in Alaska and Galesburg, Illinois, distributes to wholesale accounts, farmers markets, specialty stores and to about 1,000 consumers who subscribe in the Chicago and suburban area.
"It was just perfectly located in the Chicagoland area," Sitka founder Nic Mink said about Schaumburg. "We distribute as far north as Evanston, as far west as Aurora, and as far south as Joliet. So Schaumburg was ideal to allow our logistics team to access the whole city and suburbs."
Sitka Salmon Shares has about 35 employees, including eight workers at the Schaumburg facility that opened May 1. It has storage and distribution for about 25,000 pounds. It also partners with Shared Dream Kitchen of Lake in the Hills, which offers kitchens to entrepreneurs seeking to start their own food service business.
Working as an environmental studies professor in Wisconsin, Mink founded Sitka Salmon with Alaskan fisherman Marsh Skeele to make it easier to get high quality, sustainable seafood in the Midwest.
Consumers who subscribe receive a monthly box of wild Alaskan seafood caught by Sitka's community of fishermen. It is shipped straight to the customer's doorsteps. Boxes could include coho and king salmon, black cod, rock shrimp and more, all caught in the wild and then frozen. Three seasonal price plans range form $79 to $99 per month, according to the company website. Sitka also distributes to chefs across the Midwest, including Evanston's Nicole Pederson, executive chef of Found and The Barn.
