Portillo's expanding to Peoria

Portillo's, a fast-casual concept based in Oak Brook, said it plans to open its next eatery in Peoria, strengthening the brand in Central Illinois.

The next eatery will open at 4412 N. Rockwood Drive, the company said Monday. The Peoria location follows openings of other Portillo's restaurants in Central Illinois, including Champaign and Normal.

"A location in Peoria has been an integral part of our plan for growth in Central Illinois," says Portillo's CEO Keith Kinsey. "We are excited to join the city's vibrant commercial and residential community."

Once complete, the restaurant will feature a nostalgic diner-themed interior, drawing décor inspiration from the 1950s era. The 9,000-square foot restaurant will include seating for more than 200 guests, a seasonal outdoor patio and double-lane drive-through. It will feature Portillo's classic menu items, including Chicago-Style hot dogs, Italian Beef sandwiches, chargrilled burgers, fresh salads, and Portillo's famous chocolate cake.

Construction of the Peoria Portillo's is subject to the approval of the Developer's Special Service Area by the Peoria City Council.

In 1963, Dick Portillo invested $1,100 into a small trailer to open the first Portillo's hot dog stand in Villa Park, which he called The Dog House. Years later, Portillo's has grown to include restaurants in more than 50 locations across several states. The Portillo's brand also includes Barnelli's restaurants that serve ribs, pastas with homemade sauces, and fresh sandwiches, soups and salads.
