Events held to encourage manufacturing

The Golden Corridor Advanced Manufacturing Partnership recently had an open house for parents and students at Big Kaiser in Hoffman Estates.

The event was part of the organization's continued effort to promote manufacturing and subsequent careers.

Organizers said the best part of the event was hearing from young adults, those 19 and in their early 20s, who have recently entered the manufacturing field graduating from community college with no debt making more than $40,000 a year with their own cars and who have left the parental nest. A number of these young successes spoke at the event.

Another effort was made to show the positives of manufacturing. Students took a bus to a trade show, called Fabtech, at McCormick Place in Chicago. GCAMP split the bus trip transportation costs with Barrington Area Unit District 220 so high school students could attend. Students had no idea of the incredible technological advances of manufacturing from 3-D printing to metal fabrication machines from lasers to power coating.

GCAMP in committed to help build tomorrow's important skilled workforce and keep youth in their communities.

Suburban workers said the Chicago show went well. "This was the best trade show for us in the past few years" said Jeff Otten, general manager at Amada America in Schaumburg.

Unfortunately many people in America think manufacturing has vanished or has gone overseas, he said.
