Andy's Frozen Custard intends to open Glen Ellyn shop
Andy's Frozen Custard - a throwback to an old-fashioned soda shop - soon will serve sweet tooths in Glen Ellyn.
The chain plans to continue expanding across the suburbs with a new spot off Roosevelt Road. Just about a month ago, an Andy's opened in Naperville east of Loomis Street and Ogden Avenue.
Introducing an ice cream shop in the middle of fall might sound like a tall order, but Andy's has an extensive menu of seasonal desserts. The Naperville location, for instance, is promoting a line of pumpkin pie and apple confections.
The Glen Ellyn creamery is slated to have a more traditional debut.
Company representatives told village trustees this week the new Andy's could open around Memorial Day.
As part of a redevelopment project, the new property owner of a four-acre site east of Roosevelt Road and Lambert Avenue plans to tear down an existing Enterprise Rent-a-Car building to make way for the Andy's Frozen Custard and a drive-through window.
Trustees unanimously approved plans for the 1,255-square-foot shop and its drive-through on Monday.
As for the rest of the site, LM Commercial Development envisions two other drive-through restaurants along Roosevelt Road and an office building on Taft Avenue. Developers have not yet announced those tenants.
The existing Leslie Car Wash will continue operating on one of the lots at 375 Roosevelt Road.
Founders John and Carol Kuntz opened the original Andy's Frozen Custard in 1986 in Missouri.
The couple named the business after their son.
Andy's only serves desserts in a retro-style shop. Signature menu items are blasts from the past: floats, banana and turtle splits and "freezes" - vanilla or chocolate frozen custard mixed with soda.
Elsewhere in the suburbs, the chain has spots in Bolingbrook, Mount Prospect and Countryside. There's also an Andy's in the Naperville Crossing shopping center.
