Great Wolf Lodge sets opening date in Gurnee, taking reservations

Great Wolf Lodge water park resort is expected to open July 1 on the site of the former KeyLime Cove in Gurnee, the company reported Wednesday.

After more than a year of extensive renovations, including nearly doubling the size of the existing water park, Great Wolf Lodge is now accepting reservations for the resort.

Anchored by an 80,000-square-foot indoor water park near Six Flags Great America and Gurnee Mills, Great Wolf Lodge Illinois will be a year-round family destination with 414 guest suites, several restaurants and the signature indoor water park heated to 84 degrees. A ropes course, bowling, miniature golf, arcade and a rock-climbing wall are other features at the property at 1700 Nations Drive.

"We're thrilled to be one step closer to opening our doors at Great Wolf Lodge Illinois and welcoming families from the greater Chicagoland area and beyond," said resort General Manager Emilio Fabico.

The original Great Wolf Lodge is in Wisconsin Dells. KeyLime Cove water park resort closed in mid-April after a nine-year run in Gurnee.

Madison, Wisconsin-based Great Wolf said it planned to invest at least $65 million in new constriction and renovation at the facility. Including the KeyLime Cove purchase, Great Wolf said it expected to spend at least $100 million on the project.

Great Wolf has North America's largest water park-hotel portfolio with 14 properties. The company has been in a growth mode, with new resorts planned in the Atlanta area, near Yosemite National Park in California and in Bloomington, Minnesota, near the Mall of America.

As part of its local grand opening celebration, Great Wolf is offering a discount up to 30 percent off standard rates for stays through Dec. 30, 2018. Guests must reserve before March 9 to qualify for the opening offer. Standard rates typically start at $200 per night.
