1,282 suburban workers to lose their jobs by spring

Suburban companies are expected to cut 466 workers this spring, according to state documents. Another 816 suburban workers will be cut when Sam's Club closes suburban stores as previously announced.

The suburban cuts are part of the jobs being eliminated at five local companies, according to the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act, or WARN reports for January. Businesses file WARN reports to give the state notice of the layoffs. The reports are issued monthly. Often the companies are consolidating offices or facilities causing the need for the layoffs.

Suburban companies on the report include:

The Plastics Group Inc. will lay off 105 workers. The unlaminated plastics profile shape manufacturing company is at 7409 S. Quincy St. in Willowbrook.

• 52 workers will be let go at the end of March when the Chicago Parts Distribution Center of Daimler Trucks North America, 801 Mittel Drive, Wood Dale, closes.

PCI Pharma Services at 2200 Lake Shore Drive in Woodstock is closing and will lay off 74 workers by mid-May.

Pactiv in Bolingbrook will lay off 101 workers by the end of March. The company, at 460 Gibraltar Drive, manufactures corrugated and solid fiber boxes.

Dentsply Sirona Midwest Division, a surgical and medical instrument manufacturing company at 901 W. Oakton in Des Plaines, is closing. 133 workers are expected to lose their jobs by the end of June.

Dentsply Sirona said it plans to reorganize and transfer the production of dental hand pieces and instruments as well as the x-ray accessories manufactured in the Des Plaines facility to its other manufacturing locations in Bensheim, Germany and York, Pennsylvania. "The company will continue to invest in the strong Midwest brand, with a continued U.S.-based commercial team and by executing a robust long-term product pipeline fitting the needs of the U.S. market," a company spokesman said.

The Des Plaines facility is planned to be closed by mid-2018. During this difficult time, the company will be working with the employees and the local union regarding this transition and the impact on workers, the company said.

Meanwhile another 1,137 jobs have been eliminated with the closing of area Sam's Club stores. The membership warehouse owned by retail giant Walmart, is shutting down or converting 63 stores nationwide, it said last month.

The company attributed the decision to the need to better fulfill online orders, less population growth than expected in some markets and too many competing locations.

Locally, jobs have been lost at Sam's Club stores in Wheeling, 138; Streamwood, 191; Naperville, 170; Batavia, 150 and Romeoville, 167. Another 321 jobs will be eliminated at stores in Matteson and Moline.
