New Aldi to open in Elk Grove Village next week

Elk Grove Village shoppers will have a new grocery store soon.

The new Aldi in the Mallard Crossing Shopping Center, 905 Meacham Road, will open Thursday, June 7, the company announced Wednesday. It will replace the Aldi grocery store about a half mile north.

"It's important that we bring the best possible grocery shopping option to Elk Grove Village," Laura Branneman, Batavia division vice president for Aldi, said in a news release. "We're so excited to open our new store and continue offering local residents the food they want, at prices they love, in a format designed to make their lives easier."

The new 22,000-square-foot location doubles the size of the current store and features the company's modern concepts, including open ceilings, natural lighting and environmentally friendly building materials. Last year, Batavia-based Aldi announced it would remodel 130 stores in Chicago and the suburbs as part of a $180 million project.

"It's a better, more visible location, so it's definitely a benefit for the community and Aldi shoppers," Mayor Craig Johnson said.

The store fills about half the vacancy left when Food 4 Less closed several years ago.

A Ross Dress for Less will fill another 22,000 square feet of vacant space. Officials with the retailer have told the village the discount department store is ready to open, but they are delaying to coordinate the opening with other new locations, Johnson said.

The current Aldi store will close at 9 p.m. Wednesday, June 6. The village has not determined plans to fill the vacancy.

Doors for the new location will open at 8:25 a.m. Thursday, June 7. The opening celebration will include a Golden Ticket giveaway offering gift cards to the first 100 shoppers. Shoppers also will be able to sample Aldi brand foods and enter sweepstakes for a chance to win a one-year supply of produce.

Normal business hours will be 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday.
