BCEN chief Schumaker to head American Board of Nursing Specialties

Board of Certification for Emergency Nursing Executive Director Janie Schumaker, MBA, BSN, RN, CEN, CENP, CPHQ, FABC, has been selected president of the American Board of Nursing Specialties board of directors president for a two-year term.

Schumaker will oversee and direct ABNS operations and membership-based initiatives including ongoing collaborative research as well as supporting continuing competence as a means for ensuring patient safety, promoting accreditation to recognize quality specialty nursing certification programs, and serving as the authoritative resource and voice for specialty nursing certification.

Schumaker has spent the majority of her 27-year health care career in emergency nursing, both at the bedside and in senior management roles.

With a focus on improving patient outcomes and consumer protection by promoting specialty nursing certification, ABNS represents through its member organizations nearly 750,000 board certified registered nurses practicing in a variety of settings worldwide.

Oak Brook-based BCEN is an independent, nonprofit organization that develops certification exams for nurses across the emergency spectrum who contribute primarily to patient care, safety and outcomes.
