Amita hospitals join Alverno Laboratories network

Six suburban Amita hospitals have joined Alverno Laboratories, one of the largest integrated laboratory networks in the United States.

Amita Health Adventist Medical Center Bolingbrook, Amita Health Adventist Medical Center Glen Oaks, Amita Health Adventist Medical Center Hinsdale, Amita Health Adventist Medical Center La Grange, Amita Health Alexian Brothers Medical Center Elk Grove Village and Amita Health St. Alexius Medical Center Hoffman Estates have become a part of the Hammond, Ind.-based lab network, Alverno announced.

Alverno, which owns and operates hospital laboratories in Illinois and Indiana, features a central laboratory performing both clinical and anatomic pathology. The company was established in 1999 as a laboratory network of six hospitals, and grew its network over the years through mergers of faith-based hospital systems such as Provena and Presence health, according to its website.

Alverno CEO Sam Terese said the addition of the Amita hospitals - as well the addition of Mount Sanai and Holy Cross hospitals in Chicago, also announced this past week - will increase the number of Alverno member hospitals to 36.

"It expands our footprint and Alverno's reach into new communities and enables these hospitals to have access to our world-class technology not available in the typical hospital laboratory," Terese said.

He added the expanding network will result in hiring 20 new associates to its central lab and will increase the total number of associates from 1,700 to around 2,100. Alverno is also looking at expansion into neighboring states and additional hospitals, Terese added.
