Medline announces new national sales hub in Libertyville

Medline Industries Inc. is expanding its footprint in Lake County with one new project announced Wednesday and another in progress.

A mammoth distribution center under construction in Grayslake and a planned national sales support hub in Libertyville represent a company investment of $139 million and the addition of hundreds of employees.

The sales hub will consolidate a dozen teams, representing about 600 employees from Medline's Northfield headquarters and its Mundelein business campus, at Innovation Park Lake County in Libertyville.

Medline signed a 10-year lease and is investing $14 million to convert 140,000 square feet at Innovation Park - the former Motorola Mobility campus on Route 45 - for the consolidated sales facility.

That move is being made because of "consistent double-digit sales growth" during its 54-year history, according to spokesman Jesse Greenberg.

Medline revenues grew 19% in 2019, with every company division increasing sales, he added. Also, its local workforce has grown 34% the last two years to 4,650 employees as of Jan. 1.

The Northfield and Mundelein locations are at capacity, and the move to Innovation Park will enable the company to bring the group together quickly to best serve customers, Greenberg added.

Sales operations, including to hospitals, nursing homes, physician offices, labs, hospice and home care, will be centralized at the new office.

"Increasingly, health care providers look to Medline for customized solutions," Medline CEO Charlie Mills said in a statement.

"We've expanded the teams that create, design and support our customers and this investment in Lake County is the next step in creating a center of collaboration that focuses on making health care run better," he added.

Medline plans to move out of its Libertyville distribution center on the south side of Peterson Road at Midlothian Road and into the new $125 million, 1.4 million-square-foot facility under construction near north and east of Peterson and Alleghany roads in Grayslake.

About 350 people are employed at the Libertyville center, and 250 additional jobs will be created at the Grayslake facility, according to Greenberg.

Medline describes itself as a worldwide manufacturer, distributor and "solutions provider" that works with large national health care systems and independent facilities.

The sales hub will be its seventh facility in Lake County. Those include two small distribution centers, a manufacturing facility and sterilization plant in Waukegan.

Operations at the sterilization plant have been shut down since mid-December to install and test equipment designed to meet stricter state standards to capture ethylene oxide, a potential cancer-causing gas.
