Leonard's Bakery closes Northbrook store after 34 years

Leonard's Bakery in Northbrook - which billed itself as "the premier Jewish bakery on Chicago's Northshore" - has closed.

Owners announced the closing on Facebook Wednesday. In a post addressed to "our wonderful customers, friends and neighbors," the bakery announced that owner Marc Becker had decided to retire and close the Northbrook storefront after 34 years.

"On behalf of Marc and the entire Leonard's team," the post said, "we wanted to sincerely thank each and every one of our customers for your unconditional support and loyalty throughout all of our years in business."

According to Leonard's Bakery website, Becker followed in the footsteps of his grandparents who opened their first bakery on Chicago's South Side in 1908. Becker's parents moved the bakery to Devon Avenue in the 1940s, and he opened the Northbrook location in 1987.

The Northbrook bakery was well-known for its coffee cakes, macaroons, rugelach and other items.

Calls and emails to the bakery were not answered, and the Leonard's Bakery website was not updated to reflect the closure announcement.
