Wheeling approves restaurant/retail development near Westin hotel

A restaurant and retail complex proposal for the perimeter of the Westin Chicago North Shore in Wheeling has gained village board approval.

Plans call for the 10,000-square-foot building to rise just north of the Prairie Crossings shopping center, which includes Dunkin' Donuts, Subway and Spears Bourbon, Burgers and Beers. On the other side of the proposed development is the vacant Twin Peaks eatery.

Brett Webster, a senior project architect from Ware Malcomb's Oak Brook office, spoke on behalf of property owner Sana Corp. before the proposal recently received the Wheeling trustees' approval.

"Our client is very interested and very excited to create some additional tenant space on this property," Webster said. "We've endeavored to create the most flexible building that we could and be compatible with the surrounding properties and the ordinances required by the village for the development."

Webster said the building would be leased to a mix of restaurant and retail tenants. One possibility is a sit-down restaurant with a drive-through lane around the complex.

Under the plan, a driveway would be built for access to the building off Milwaukee Avenue near Lake-Cook Road. The 1½-acre site currently serves as temporary parking lot north of Prairie Crossings.

No tenants have been publicly announced yet for the building.

Some concerns were expressed by Wheeling plan commission member Michael Sprague about whether tenants of the new development would impact businesses in neighboring shopping plazas, but the advisory panel ultimately issued a recommendation for village board approval.
