U.S. Waterproofing moves headquarters back to Schaumburg

U.S. Waterproofing returns its headquarters to Schaumburg on Friday after having left in 2007 for what was then a larger building in Rolling Meadows.

The 65-year-old company brings nearly 190 employees and a $3.5 million improvement to the vacant building at 81 Remington Road, right behind the village's new Amazon Fresh store, Schaumburg Economic Development Director Matt Frank said.

U.S. Waterproofing President Matt Stock said his company has been based in a few Northwest suburban locations since 1979, but that this is the first site where significant future growth is anticipated without having to move again.

"We needed space, and industrial space suited to our needs is difficult to come by," Stock said. "We have a specialized business. We have a lot of vehicles and people. Our parking-to-building ratio is higher than normal."

Stock said Frank helped the company find a suitable location, and to apply for the Class 6B tax incentive from Cook County that helped enable the needed improvements to the office and warehouse building that included making it a welcoming environment for employees.

"He played a key role," Stock said. "It's never easy when you're moving a business. He was phenomenal."

The company is not abandoning its Rolling Meadows building at 5650 Meadowbrook Court, but will use it as a production facility. The company will have a total of just over 200 employees divided among both locations, Stock said.

The move was driven by recent growth and the expectation of more hiring and training to come.

"We're lucky to be growing by people wanting to spend money on their homes," he said.

New hires often come from other fields related to real estate, but aren't required to have backgrounds in the specific skills of U.S. Waterproofing.

"We prefer to train them our way," Stock said. "We hire for attitude and we teach for skill."

The new building is intended to reflect the people Stock wants to work there. The spaces will feel friendly and include a fitness area and large, open kitchen.

The easy access to roadways taking employees throughout the Chicago area was key to the choice of location, Stock said. And the nearby amenities of Schaumburg will help and be helped by his staff.

"We have a lot of trucks and personal vehicles that will fill up locally," Stock said. "And the employees will support our local restaurants."
