Report: Medline Industries exploring a sale

Northfield-based Medline Industries Inc. is exploring a sale, according to the several media reports.

The medical-supply company could be valued as much as $30 billion and has hired Goldman Sachs Group Inc. to run the process, according to a Wall Street Journal report.

Representatives from Medline did not respond to a request for comment on the reports.

Medline's facility in Waukegan has come under public scrutiny over its use of the cancer-causing gas ethylene oxide, which company officials have said they use to sterilize medical equipment and N95 face masks.

Tea Tanaka of Stop ETO in Lake County issued a statement on behalf of the community group.

"Regardless of who owns Medline, we hope that ethylene oxide use will be replaced with a safer alternative that does not place undo burden on low income communities already suffering from environmental injustice," Tanaka said.

According to reports, the sale of Medline is at an early stage.
