Angelo Caputo's Bloomingdale store to undergo $4 million in improvements

Angelo Caputo's Fresh Markets in Bloomingdale is undergoing $4 million in renovations.

Village President Franco Coladipietro told attendees at his annual State of the Village address this week the grocery store is changing its facade, creating a station for preparing hot meals and outdoor space for a garden center.

The store is spending $4 million on the renovations, with the village reimbursing the company $750,000 upon completion later this fall.

"This means that Caputo's is invested in staying in Bloomingdale," Coladipietro said. "This is great for the community to see."

Angelo Caputo's Fresh Markets, which has been in Bloomingdale since 2004, has seen increased competition over the years with such brands as Mariano's, Amazon Fresh and Woodman's coming to the area.

Village Administrator Peter Scalera said the store still will have a viable customer base despite more grocery chains coming in.

"They have been here a long time and they will survive the addition of other national brands," Scalera said. "The improvements will keep them competitive with other existing grocers. It gives them a fresher look and keeps them appealing to other customers."

The small chain specializes in organic foods, baked Italian goods and international specialty items. There are stores in Addison, Hanover Park, Naperville, South Elgin, Carol Stream and Elmwood Park.

On June 16, company founder Angelo Caputo died at the age of 89.

Representatives from the company could not be reached for comment on the Bloomingdale project.
