Schaumburg to sign lease to relocate nursing division
Schaumburg trustees are poised Tuesday to approve a 62-month lease allowing the village's nursing and senior services division to relocate this summer to Market Square shopping center.
The move also would pave the way for the demolition of the 70-year-old Slingerland House on Schaumburg's municipal campus, which has been the nursing division's home since 1995.
The division provides health services and loans certain types of medical equipment to seniors and people with disabilities in the village.
The 3,654-square-foot space the village would rent at Market Square, at the northwest corner of Plum Grove and Schaumburg roads, previously was occupied by a dry cleaners and neighboring judo school.
For the first year of the lease, the village will pay $50,615 - or $4,217.92 per month. The rent will increase by 3 percent each year, but will be free in months 1, 13, 14, 25 and 26 of the lease.
Kathleen Tempesta, Schaumburg's community services director, said the incentive is fairly typical for commercial lease agreements, and one the village was happy to accept.
All in all, the cost of the agreement is in line with the village's estimates last summer when trustees voted 5-1 to relocate instead of paying $375,000 to renovate the Slingerland House. Upgrades are needed to bring the house into full compliance with the Americans With Disabilities Act, officials said.
"The staff is very excited about moving to a location that will give them more flexibility," Tempesta said.
While clients have expressed a mixture of happiness for the new site and sadness about the change, Tempesta said she's confident all will recognize how much better they're served by the new location.
Besides the cost of the lease, the village has budgeted $130,000 to make the rented space usable for the nursing division and $98,000 to raze the Slingerland House.
The lease would start May 1, with the nursing division to open at Market Square in either July or August. Demolition of the former headquarters would occur no later than April 2019.
Trustee Marge Connelly, who chairs the village board's Engineering and Public Works Committee, said its three members unanimously recommended approval of the lease last week.
Though officials haven't yet planned the nursing division's future beyond the 5-year lease, it gives them time to fully explore their options, Connelly said.
