7 awards honor Daily Herald for exemplary journalism

The work of several Daily Herald staff members earned accolades from the Chicago Headline Club during the 41st annual Peter Lisagor Awards for Exemplary Journalism.

The paper secured seven awards recognizing a broad array of writing, design and photography published in 2017.

The winning works were chosen from among 18 pieces nominated for the awards, which the Headline Club doled out during a dinner Friday in Chicago.

The winning reporters, editors and photographer all were recognized in a category for daily newspapers with circulation under 100,000.

Winners include:

• Best Editorial Writing: The Editorial Board for a series explaining the paper's Facts Matter campaign against so-called fake news.

• Best Design: Assistant Managing Editor Neil Holdway for a spread of coverage showcasing the Aug. 21 solar eclipse.

• Best News Photo: Photographer John Starks for a picture of a man grieving after a worker died in a sewer line in Streamwood.

• Best Sports Photo: Starks for his images capturing professional and high school athletic action.

• Best Deadline Reporting: The Daily Herald staff for coverage of record-breaking floods in July 2017 in Lake County.

• Best Business or Consumer Reporting: Staff writers Chris Placek, Lauren Rohr, Marco Ortiz and Anna Marie Kukec, along with Editor of Data Journalism and Graphics Tim Broderick and photographer Joe Lewnard for a package of stories about the minimum wage in Cook County.

• Best Feature Story or Series: Columnist Burt Constable for "Who killed Tim McNamee?"
