About three months after Mount Prospect trustees voted to allow video gambling in town, the village now has its first venue for it.

The village board on Tuesday granted a liquor license permitting video gambling to Pap's Ultimate Bar and Grill, 1904 S. Elmhurst Road.

"You are the template, the first ones out of the gate, and I think a lot of folks are going to be looking to you to see how to do it right, and we're going to expect you to do it right and I know you will do it right," Mayor Arlene Juracek told Pap's representatives.

Juracek, who also serves as the village's liquor commissioner, visited the establishment Sunday.

"We believe this is a solid application, which meets the intent of the act," she said, adding that the business' layout effectively segregates the gambling from the restaurant.

Owner Ted Pappas said the business hopes to be a good example of acting responsibility.

"You just got to be very vigilant. We don't want to have any youngsters coming in there and playing the games. We don't have a lot of youngsters coming in there at all," he said.

Trustee Paul Hoefert, one of two trustees who voted against video gambling in August, voted in favor of Pap's license request Tuesday.

"I lost that argument," he said. "That's OK. That's how this works. We have it. As long as it's done right, obviously I will support that."
