Longtime Elk Grove Village trustee Petri bids farewell after 40 years

Elk Grove Village Trustee James "Jim" Petri bid farewell Tuesday at his final village board meeting after more than 40 years of service.

Petri, who did not run for re-election in April, was honored with the installation of a plaque on the village's "Rotunda of Recognition."

"In everyone's life, the time comes to make a change and that time has come for me," Petri said. "It is with heartfelt gratitude that I thank the citizens of Elk Grove for trusting me to serve them over the past four decades."

Petri was elected in 1979 and served on 14 boards, commissions and committees during his tenure. He attended more than 800 village board meetings, overseeing major changes in the community.

Among his list of notable accomplishments, Petri included the growth of the village past Meacham Road, adding cable television to the community, bringing Lake Michigan water to Elk Grove Village and surrounding suburbs, numerous interstate and roadway expansions and improvements, redevelopment of the Town Center, development of the new technology park and construction of village facilities, including a public works building that bears his name.

"His keen mind, business intellect, and ability to solve problems and shape public policy will be missed," Mayor Craig Johnson said in a news release. "The residents of Elk Grove Village and the entire region will forever benefit from Jim's strong dedication and impressive accomplishments."
