Lake County authorizes pot sales taxes

Lake County officials on Tuesday covered its bases by authorizing the mechanism to collect taxes on the sales of recreational marijuana in both incorporated and unincorporated areas.

Beginning Jan. 1, state law will allow for the production, sale, and adult use of recreational cannabis. The measure passed Tuesday allows the county to collect 3.75% of gross sales in unincorporated areas as well as 3% in incorporated communities that allow the sale.

County officials have not decided whether to allow recreational sales but if they vote against, the 3% tax would still come into play.
