After possible virus exposure, District 25 teachers, students cleared to return to school

Arlington Heights Elementary District 25 employees and students who stayed home from school earlier this week due to a possible coronavirus exposure have been cleared to return, the district's superintendent said Wednesday.

Any initial threat of exposure to two teachers and their children - who work at or attend Dryden, Ivy Hill, Greenbrier and Olive-Mary Stitt elementary schools - has been eliminated, Superintendent Lori Bein wrote in a letter to parents Wednesday afternoon.

Bein told parents in an initial email Sunday night that the family recently learned their babysitter's relative, a hospital employee, was exposed to a patient diagnosed with the illness.

Arlington Heights village officials said the employee works at Northwest Community Hospital, where a man in his 70s is being treated for the illness.

Officials say the two District 25 employees and their children never showed any symptoms, and voluntarily opted to stay home from school as a precaution.

In a separate letter earlier this week, Bein reported two more possible situations involving Windsor Elementary School and South Middle School, in which people again came in contact with others who may have been exposed to someone with coronavirus.

On Wednesday, Bein said the possible contact related to Windsor has also ended well, as the person of possible contact has passed a 14-day incubation period with no symptoms.

District officials on Wednesday said they did not have any additional information about the South staff member, but they previously reported the person had no symptoms.

"We look forward to welcoming our colleagues and our students back to school," Bein wrote. "I want to thank our colleagues and families who are being proactive in communicating about their situations. They have been openly sharing with us because they care about our community and our schools."
