Recreational marijuana dispensary opens for business in Wheeling

Wheeling's first recreational marijuana dispensary made its first sale Monday, after a grand opening ceremony attended by Village President Patrick Horcher and other dignitaries.

Hatch dispensary is operating out of the former TGI Fridays restaurant at 1500 E. Lake-Cook Road. The 5,800-square-foot building is in the Schwind Crossings shopping center.

Another Hatch, formerly called Mindful, already operates in Addison.

Hatch will be open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays, and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sundays.

As part of Monday's opening, Hatch donated $100,000 to Oakton Community College to create the Hatch Social Equity Opportunity Scholarship. The scholarship will support social equity students enrolled in the college's cannabis programs by providing resources for tuition, books and fees.

The donation also will support internships at Hatch for qualified social equity students who are interested in learning about operating a dispensary and perhaps applying for a dispensary license in the future.
