Ross Dress for Less, Aldi opening in Elk Grove Village

A Ross Dress for Less clothing outlet and Aldi grocery store will be opening as early as this summer in a strip mall in Elk Grove Village.

The stores will be opening next door to the Walmart near the intersection of Meacham and Nerge roads, on the west side of town. Each store will occupy about 22,000 square feet of space at the Mallard Crossing Shopping Center in the 800 block of Meacham Road.

The space was left vacant when the Food 4 Less grocery store closed several years ago.

"Most places are fighting stores going out of business," Mayor Craig Johnson said. "It's nice to see them coming in and filling places up."

Aldi is relocating just a half mile south from its location next to Home Depot on Meacham Road. The company wants more space for the grocery than its current location, Johnson said. It's expected to open in June.

Plans to fill the current Aldi location when it becomes vacant have not been announced. Last year, Batavia-based Aldi announced it would be remodeling 130 stores in Chicago and the suburbs in a project costing about $180 million.

The renovations are part of the company's nationwide plan to update and expand more than 1,300 U.S. stores by 2020.

The Ross Dress for Less will be new to the village. The California-based discount department store chain plans to open its doors by late spring or early summer, Johnson said.

There will be about 11,000 square feet of space remaining vacant in Mallard Crossing after the stores open.
