Krusinski completes work on Amazon distribution center

MELROSE PARK - Krusinski Construction Co. said it has completed construction on Ridgeline Property Group's Chariot Logistics Center on the site of the former Maywood Park Racetrack.

The three-building, 623,000-square-foot logistics center sits on about 55 acres at North and 5th avenues. The project was launched as a speculative development but later became a build-to-suit project when all buildings were leased to Amazon, one of the largest e-commerce companies in the nation.

Demolition and site work to prepare for construction was extensive and took approximately six months to complete. Oak Brook-based Krusinski Construction worked closely with the Illinois Department of Transportation, ComEd, Nicor and the village of Melrose Park to build new infrastructure elements, including roads, detention ponds, water mains and stormwater systems, and utility service.

"It's no small undertaking to demolish existing improvements and prepare a significant land site for a substantial development like Chariot Logistics Center," says Michael Metz, vice president of Krusinski Construction.

The name Chariot Logistics Center pays tribute to the former use of the site. Maywood Park Racetrack, which featured harness racing, was developed in 1946. Races were held at the track until 2015.

About 42,000 tons of concrete was reclaimed from the site, including Maywood Park's grandstand, the contractor said.
